August We Are Onyx Box Review

We Are Onyx is a beauty box tailored to women of color. It is a $25 monthly subscription of hair, skin and nail samples shipped right to your front door that always includes at least 5 regular, deluxe and/or full size samples. The total for all of the items shipped will always exceed the $25 paid for the box. Four samples are picked by their beauty editors and one sample is left to the subscribers to choose what they would prefer. When a person signs up for a We Are Onyx box, they are prompted to fill out a profile indicating their skin and hair type, so no one should be left with a product they can’t use.

I have been getting We Are Onyx boxes for 2 months now. It’s so exciting to get home each month to find a box full of new goodies waiting for me to try. So far, I’ve loved everything that I have tried from my Onyx boxes, but I must admit that I have yet to try all of my products. There’s just never enough time in a month.

In the August We Are Oynx Box, I got one full size bottle of the Design Essentials Natural Honey & Shea Edge Tamer, a deluxe sample of the Shea Moisture Olive & Green Tea Body Lotion, two full size bottles of CinaPro Nail Sugar, and a sample of Briogeo Don’t Dispair, Repair Hair Mask.

Design Essentials Natural Honey & Shea Edge Tamer
I was so happy to get the Design Essentials Natural Honey & Shea Edge Tamer in my August box. Just the other day I was thinking about how badly I needed to buy an edge control gel. I have been using ECO Styler gel on my edges ever since I decided to go natural but was spoiled when I used my cousins ORS edge control while on vacation in July. Styling gel just can’t cut it for my edges any more.

I love the compact packaging of the Design Essentials container. It will be very easy for me to pack this in my travel bag when I go on vacations or stay somewhere overnight. The smell of the product is to die for. I feel like I could eat this stuff! It almost smells like what I imagine a passion fruit Jolly Rancher to smell like. The consistency is very thick, but it smooths on easily onto the hair and does not leave a sticky or white residue behind.

The packaging states that the “Design Essentials Natural Honey & Shea Edge Tamer is a moisturizing, firmer-hold edge control gel designed for curly to coily hair that smoothly lays down the hairline. Honey and shea butter add nourishment, brilliant shine and longer, more intense hold”. I give this product a thumbs up and can’t wait to add it to my hair regimen!

SheaMoisture Olive & Green Tea Body Lotion

I must admit that I am a little bias when it comes to Shea Moisture products. I love everything there is about the Shea Moisture brand – From the African American CEO/Founder to the lifesaving results of using their hair products. In my July Onyx box, I got a full size sample of the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Hand Cream that I fell so in love with I started using it on my entire body instead of just my hands. So when I got a sample of the actual body lotion, my mind was already made up that I liked this product before I had even tried it.

But after trying it, I still loved it. It has a refreshing smell, much different from the Coconut and Hibiscus line, but still very pleasant. It almost smells sort of flowery to me. It glides on easily and leaves the skin feeling soft and silky.

The packaging states that the “ultra-moisturizing blend of organic shea butter and olive oil, green tea extract and avocado nourishes and repairs dry skin”. Another thumbs up from me. I guess I can stop using the hand creme on my whole body now.

CinaPro Nail SugarCinapro2

I received two colors of the CinaPro Nail Sugar polish: Cotton Candy, a sheer soft pink polish with sparkles, and Hyperactive, a sheer lime green polish with sparkles. Both of these polishes are holographic polishes, which before receiving this box, I had never heard of before. Holographic polishes are nail polishes that appear to change colors when light hits them. They will usually reflect a rainbow of color depending on how the light hits it. This specific brand of holographic polishes are loaded with 100,000 holographic glitters in every bottle and also comes with an LED light cap for precise application.

Both of these colors are very similar to each other since the colors are so sheer. I would recommend painting a base coat of another more opage color before applying an application of the Nail Sugar polish. I would also recommend painting two coats of the nail sugar polish before topping it off with a clear top coat for best results.

I am not big on nail glitter polishes. As a 25 year old women trying to be taken serious in my professional career, I feel like glittery polish makes me appear more childlike than I would like. I also feel that glittery polish can make a person’s nails look patchy depending on the angle its being viewed from, so I generally stay away from glittery polishes and probably would not have purchased these polishes if I saw them in a store.

With all of that in mind, overall, I think they are nice polishes. I used the Cotton Candy color as an accent nail on top of a deep purple color I was already wearing and actually liked how it came out. I didn’t however, like the Hyperactive color over the green polish I was wearing on my toes. I feel like the glitter makes the polish look patchy and messy. I do love the packaging of the bottles. I think they are very adorable. They have this asymmetric shape where the bottle is round 3/4 of the way and flat on one side. I know that if I dropped this bottle while painting my nails, the bottle would not keep rolling away making a larger mess than necessary. I also love the LED light. Although its not a necessary feature, it is quite fun and will now be the first polish I pull out when I babysit my little cousins or goddaughter. The holographic sparkles are pretty cool too, so I’ll give this product a thumbs up.

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask

Last but not least I received  a sample of the Briogeo Don’t Dispair, Repair Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. We Are Onyx claims that this hair mask will create hair that is vibrant and full of life with earth’s all natural ingredients, like avocado and quinoa, to promote nourishment and health without slacking on performance.  The instructions say to evenly massage the mask into hair after shampooing and leave in for 3-5 minutes before rinsing out. Or cover the hair in a plastic cap and sit under a dryer for 10 minutes for an even deeper conditioning.

Since I have been natural, I have yet used a conditioner that claims to be a deep conditioner. Would you believe me if I told you that was another thing I’ve been thinking about purchasing? Because it is. My version of a deep conditioning is using my regular SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner with a plastic cap and letting it sit for 30 minutes. I am excited to try a product actually labeled as a deep conditioner, but I only received a 0.5 oz sample pack, so I am very afraid that it wont be enough.

Since the sample came in a non-recloseable package and I just washed my hair a few days ago, I’m unable to give a review on the smell, texture, and effectiveness of this product at this time, but I will come back with an update once I do.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my We Are Onyx box subscription. It’s so much fun to receive samples in the mail of things you may have never known existed other wise. I’m definitely keeping my subscription going. The sample choice for the September box was between a makeup sample or skin care sample. I chose make-up. Now I’m excited all over again!
