Easy & Affordable Everyday Makeup for Black Women with Oily Skin

I have very oily skin. Because of that I get lots of blackheads and breakouts which leads to dark marks. For my everyday makeup, I like looks that cover up those dark marks, keeps me matte, and looks as natural as possible. Don’t get me wrong, I love an over the top makeup look as much as the next girl, but for everyday, I try to keep it simple.

I also try to keep it affordable. 99.9% of the makeup I own is from the drugstore. I want makeup that works, but I’m not trying to break the bank to get it. If any of this sounds like you too, keep reading for my tips, tricks, and products that I turn to on a daily basis.

Step 1: Primer

Primers help to keep oily skin matte and help makeup adhere to the face. I never wear makeup without a primer underneath. In the summer, when my skin tends to be a lot oilier, I apply primer to my entire face. In the cooler seasons, I apply primer just to my oily areas, which is mainly my t-zone. For both instances, I use my fingers to apply the product to my face.51ppofxj2wl-_sy679_

Currently, I’m using the Mary Kay Foundation Primer. Its an SPF 15, oil free, silicone based primer that works pretty well, but it can be a bit pricey ($18.00) compared to drug store primers when ordered from a Mary Kay Consultant. I did however find an Amazon link to buy it for $9.50. Get the $9.50 Mary Kay Foundation Primer here.

If you don’t want to order something online or wait for the product to come in the mail, another primer I love is the Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer. This primer runs about $7 at the drug store and is a cream constancy but also works pretty well.

Step 2: Foundation

Foundation is used to cover any imperfections on the face. This can be anything from dark marks, to large pores or fine lines and wrinkles. I use foundation mainly to cover up dark marks left behind from blemishes. The foundation I’m loving at the moment is the Fit Me! Matte + Poreless Foundation from Maybelline New York. It’s a medium coverage, watery consistency that dries quickly and stays matte. The shades for darker women are limited, which can be a major con, but I was able to find a shade that matches pretty well with my complexion. My shade is Mocha (360) in the normal to oily line.

Since this product doesn’t have a pump, I pour a small, dime-sized, amount to the back of my hand and use the Real Techniques Stippling Brush to grab product off my hand and apply onto my face.

Step 3: Eyebrows

Full, thick eyebrows are really in right now. I remember when I got my eyebrows waxed for the first time for my middle school prom, everyone was rocking thin, barely there brows. That is not the case anymore. The fuller the brows, the better.

I naturally have thick and shapely brows, so I don’t like to do that much to my brows. I use a super cheap brow/eyeliner pencil by New York Color Cosmetics (NYC) to fill in spars areas in my brows and then trace the outline of my eyebrow to emphasize my brow shape. This eyebrow pencil will run you 99 cents at the drug store and works better than more expensive brow pencils I’ve tried. I use the color 922 Dark Brown for my brows.

Step 4: concealer

Concealer is used to further hide imperfections and can also be used to brighten or darken desired areas. I use concealer to highlight my under-eye area, nose, chin, cupids bow, and around my eyebrows. My ultimate favorite concealer is the L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD Concealer. This concealer will run you about $4 at your local beauty supply store, or can also be found online. It has a super opaque formula and has an easy to apply brush applicator. I use the L.A. Girl Pro Concealer in Toffee to highlight and occasionally will use the L.A. Girl Pro Concealer in Beautiful Bronze to cover blemishes.

TIP: Your highlighter shade should only be 2 shades lighter than your true color. Anything lighter will be too much.

This diagram from the blog Hairspray & High Heels is an awesome example of exactly where I apply my highlighter. On her blog, she also lists a bunch of products that she loves to use for highlighters.

Once my concealer is applied in the desired areas, I use a large foundation brush to blend it all in. Currently, I’m using the EcoTools Flat Foundation Brush that I got from Walgreens for about $6.

Step 5: Powder

Powder is used to set liquid makeup and can also help oily girls stay matte longer. I like to use the Black Radiance Pressed Powder in a lighter shade, Honey Amber (8601), to set my highlight and the same Black Radiance Pressed Powder in my true skin tone, Golden Almond, to set the rest of my foundation.

To apply this product, I use a big fluffy powder brush that I got in a Groupon brush kit years ago. Powder brushes can be found for really cheap like this cute ABC Pro Makeup Cosmetic Powder Foundation Brush on Amazon.

Step 6: Blush

After applying so many products to cover up flaws, our skin can look washed out and lifeless. Blush is used to put some of the dimension and color back into our skin. My favorite blush right now is the Avon Ideal Luminous Blush in the color Cranberry (E404) which runs at about $9.00.  I especially love this blush in the winter and fall months due to the deep berry color.

In the Spring and summer, I’m also a fan of the e.l.f. Blush Palette in Light. I use the bottom right color most often, but will also use the two colors on the left when I feel like changing things up. I’ve also used the top right color to set my under eye highlight in the past.

FUN FACT: Those little squares pop out, so if you wanted to buy the palatte in dark and light, you could move them around to mix and match your favorite colors into one pallet.51GlR7vKaiL._SX522_

I apply my blush with a blush brush that I got in my Groupon brush kit (same kit as my powder brush). But blush brushes are also very inexpensive, like this Real Techniques Blush Brush listed on Amazon for $3.84.

The  Avon Ideal Luminous Blush also comes with a little blush brush. It’s not the best brush to use to apply blush due to how small it is, but it would work if no other options were available.

Step 7: Mascara

Mascara is used to emphasize eyelashes and make eyes pop. I love mascara. If I could only use one product for the rest of my life, I would probably choose mascara… or concealer… But I digress. My favorite mascara at the moment is the Rimmel London Scandaleyes Curved Brush Mascara. The brush does a great job at lifting the eyelashes and creating volume while separating each lash.

TIP: To apply mascara to my top lashes, I hold a mirror close to my lap during application and look down to keep the mascara from getting on my upper eyelid. I apply two coats to my top lashes and leave my bottom lashes bare. I really like how bright and open my eyes look with just the top lashes coated in mascara, but if you like the look of having top and bottom lashes coated, go for it. Just hold the mirror above your head and look up when applying mascara to the bottom lashes.

Step 8: Setting Spray

Setting spray is used to, well, to set makeup. It takes away the powdery finish so that makeup looks seamless and is fixed in place. Setting spray can also help oily girls stay matte for longer. My favorite setting spray is the e.l.f. Makeup Mist and Set. This spray leaves me matte all day and keeps my makeup from transferring to other things.

Step 9: Lipstick

NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream Cannes

Lipstick is used to enhance the lips. Lipstick is one of my ultimate favorite makeup items. My everyday makeup routine stays the same everyday, but everyday, my lipstick choice changes. I like to have fun with my lip colors and really like to wear colors on a daily basis that some might not think are everyday options. But if I had to play it safe, I would choose the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes as my everyday lip color. It’s a soft peachy pink that’s appropriate no matter the occasion.

But if you want to know my favorite lip products of all time, the award would have to go to ColourPop Cosmetics for their Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks. These lipstick come in tons of fun colors and really last all day, some even through eating.

Step 10: Admire

With those steps complete, the only thing left to do is stare in the mirror at the beautiful job done. I love this look. It’s easy, cheap, stays matte, and doesn’t take much time to complete.
